The name galleria MARI APERTI is a reference to the seas surrounding Sicily and the Mediterranean Sea in its entirety, which has always been as divisive as it is unifying.
To a certain extent, the galleria MARI APERTI is an independent project within the Academy. The Galeria's programs and perspectives complement, clarify or contrast the events at the Academy and are intended to make them tangible to the senses in a particularly intense way.
The galleria MARI APERTI sees itself as a gallery for contemporary art from African and Arab countries. Works by Afro-European and Arab-European artists are also on display. The exhibited works of art include paintings, graphic art and media art from the decades since the independence of the first African country (Libya in 1951).
The exhibitions take up relevant themes of modern societies that use their artistic and aesthetic means to explore and shape the human cosmos as a whole world. The galleria MARI APERTI sees itself as a source of aesthetic inspiration. An emphatically public-oriented appearance is a central moment for the gallery.
Galeria MARI APERTI also cooperates with other exhibition venues and artists, including the non-profit online gallery kukutana.net - which awards an art prize for sub-Saharan African art every two years - and the LAWRENCE funun GALLERY in Berlin, which has made a name for itself since its foundation in 2017, particularly with the presentation of artists from the Middle East.
Changing curators are entrusted with the creation of exhibitions. Themes are set in collaboration with the ONE SKY academy | accademia UN CIELO. Publications such as catalogs, but also online video or audio works complement the work. An emphatically public-oriented appearance is a central moment for the gallery.
